Christer Aberg - Founder and Life President

Originally from Sweden, Christer learned to play the cornet with the Salvation Army. He has been a Salvation Army bandmaster in Sweden and is also an experienced brass teacher and musical director. Since moving to England, Christer has taught widely within the Shepway area. Founding Shepway Brass Academy is the realisation of a long-held dream for him. Christer is now living back in Sweden but is still very much involved in what the SBA is doing.

Paul Driscoll – Musical Director and teacher

Paul has been a brass musician since the age of 11 and plays regularly with the BAE Systems Brass Band, Rochester. He began with the trombone but has spent many years playing both tenor horn and baritone. Paul has a BEd (Hons) degree in Art and early years education. His career has led him to be Music coordinator in many primary schools, Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator and he has twice been a Headteacher. He currently works as a primary school teacher and brass teacher supporting whole class Music Plus projects in schools. Paul leads the Beginner and Academy Bands.

Karen Hickman - Tutor
Karen has been playing her principal instrument, the clarinet, since the age of 9. She is a woodwind tutor both privately and for Make Time for Music.  Introduced to brass playing through her daughter Lauren, she has found herself learning to play cornet and tenor horn, although she considers herself very much a beginner. Karen runs the Training band alongside Paul Barton where, when not conducting, she can be found playing the drum kit.  Karen can also be found playing percussion for Snowdown Colliery Welfare Band.
Paul Barton – Teacher and Mentor

Paul has been playing trumpet and cornet since the age of 9, studying under an ex-military musical director. He played with the Hythe Concert Band for many years. He is a freelance music tutor specialising in brass, as well as tutoring for Music for Schools Foundation. Paul currently holds 1 to 1 lessons with some of our members and plays cornet supporting the Academy band.

Lauren Hickman - Tutor and Mentor
Lauren has been playing trumpet since she was 7, studying under former Royal Marines Band Master Trevor Attwood. Through Shepway Brass Academy,  Lauren has found a love for the Flugelhorn, a solo instrument in a brass band which she also plays in the Snowdown Colliery Welfare Band. Lauren is currently studying music at university with high hopes of continuing in the future as a professional musician.
